Here's where you can turn for help to make ends meet in the face of higher energy prices. LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, helps pay for regular and emergency heating costs. Even if your heat is included in your rent, you may qualify. New York's benefit program is structured in such a way that higher benefits are provided to those households that have larger percentages of their income spent on energy costs, contain a vulnerable individual (children under the age of 6, adults aged 60 or older, or disabled individuals) and have the lowest income. Funds are limited, so it is strongly recommended that you apply early. Applications are accepted at all local departments of Social Services. To find out where you can obtain and file an application in New York, call 1-800-342-3009 or visit www.otda.state.ny.us. New York Energy $martsm Loan Program: Residential borrowers (1-4 family homes) can qualify for reduced interest rates on loans up to $20,000 used to finance certain energy-efficient improvements to their homes which have been pre-qualified by NYSERDA, or to purchase ENERGY STAR®-rated appliances. Funding is available on a first-come, first-serve basis, or until funds are fully committed. For more information call toll-free 1-866-NYSERDA or visit www.nyserda.org/loanfund.WAP, the Weatherization Assistance Program, is the largest residential energy conservation program in the country. It installs energy-efficient measures in income-eligible homes free of charge, reducing energy use by approximately 31 percent in each home and saving the average homeowner about $300 per year. These energy-efficient measures include air sealing (weather-stripping, caulking), wall and ceiling insulation, heating system improvements or replacement, efficiency improvements in lighting, hot water tank and pipe insulation and more. Program services are available to both homeowners and renters, with priority given to senior citizens, families with children and disabled individuals. To see if you can tap into WAP, call toll-free 1-866-275-3427. |
